Bill DeMayo served a tour as a bombardier in World War II making it possible for him to obtain a college education under the G.I. bill. He shared the rest of his life with wife Stella and daughters Neda and Diana.

His career experiences as revenue agent, then as an estate tax planner with Ernst Young followed by a stint at the University of New Haven; first as the treasurer, then Professor and finally a planned giving Officer were all challenging, enjoyable and successful experiences In 1998, Stella, Neda, Diana, and Bill decided to sell all their securities and purchase a 300 hundred acre ranch in California so that Neda could realize her lifelong dream to establish a wild horse sanctuary and use the ranch for that purpose; Stella and Bill could enjoy their retirement home on the property and enable their daughters to obtain the benefits of their future inheritance while he and Stella are still living, and Diana could enjoy this vacation retreat, volunteer for projects at the sanctuary and redirect her investment into real estate property.

So this is the genesis of “Return to Freedom” an American Wild Horse Sanctuary located in Lompoc, CA, now the home of more than 125 wild mustangs that probably would have been slaughtered by now, Neda has created a model sanctuary that is saving herds of horses and keeping their families intact and preserving their wonderful family relationships.
